How to notify the IRS that your address changed
I moved! How to notify the IRS that your address changed
We all move for different reasons. Sometimes it is for work, other times to get closer to family, or maybe to get a change of scenery. What is important is that you remember is that you need to notify the IRS of any address changes.
The IRS requires an updated address to send you important notifications regarding your tax situation. They send you a bunch of things, such as refund checks by mail and notices or announcements. Communication from the IRS is significant to both you and the government, especially if a tax audit ever comes into play.
How do you let them know you moved?
The change of address process can take up to six weeks to complete and it would be wise to get started as soon as you can. This waiting period can be longer during tax season, and especially with the pandemic guidelines in effect. There is a variety of ways to get in touch with the IRS to let them know that your living situation has changed. These include:
- Using IRS forms 8822 and 8822-B
Form 8822 is the official IRS change of address form for individual tax returns. This form is also used for gifts, GSTT (Generation-skipping Transfer Tax), and estate tax as well.
You are required to fill in your personal information as well as both your old and new address. If you need to declare a change of address for a business, you would need to file Form 8822-B. You are required to be the primary party responsible for running the business. Instructions on where to send the form after you fill it are on the second page.
- Make a written statement.
Another way to let the IRS know you moved is by sending a written statement. The statement should cover all your current information and should include your name, social security number (You can also use your tax ID number), and both your old and new address. Make sure you have signed the statement before sending it.
If you file your taxes jointly, make sure your partner’s signature and information are included in the statement as well. Separated spouses should inform the IRS of any address changes individually.
- Filing your tax return
Yep, you read that right. It is possibly the easiest way to get your address updated with the IRS. Filing your tax returns with your new address is considered official communication of changes in your living situation. The IRS will update their records to match your new address.
- In-Person
NOTE: With the covid-19 pandemic, many institutions encourage people to limit in-person interactions as much as possible. You might have to call ahead and make an appointment.
That being said, it is possible to visit the Tax Assistance Center near you and make the change of address report in-person. The agent will require your proof of identification for the process.
You can also notify the IRS over a phone call. You will need to provide your full name, Social Security Number, your date of birth, and the address change information.
